PS3 Slim/Price Cut Semi-Confirmed *update* Make That Confirmed!

This has probably been one of the worst kept secrets of the industry of the last few years (internet sez hi). On Destructoid there’s a post that links to K-Mart’s website teasing the PS3 Slim with a lower price. Also mentioned is that it’s shipping with a 120GB hard drive on August 24th, possibly at $299.99. Sony has some event scheduled today at 12:30pm eastern, this is probably when they’ll announce it. I look forward to seeing if the Slim design is the one we’ve been seeing for months on the big boy game blogs.

So yeah, check out any of the blogs and it’s there, $299 and the Slim(w/120GB HDD) dropping the 1st week in Sept.  Check out the Joystiq gallery for hi-rez pics.

Elder Scrolls MMO instead of Elder Scrolls 5?

Joystiq reported on a quote by Bethesda’s Todd Howard during a speech at Quakecon, “We are working on our next big game but we are not talking about it.” Don’t look for a new Elder Scrolls game in the near future; Howard said there are no current plans for an “Elder Scrolls 5.” As far as an Elder Scrolls based MMO, he said in jest, “There’s always a chance.”  We’re huge Bethesda fans ’round these parts, especially of Oblivion(Elders Scrolls 4), but myself personally, am not big on the MMO persuasion….and if I were serious about getting into one, I’d probably be jumping on that WOW train, but that’s just me.

World of Warcraft Cataclysm Details

Below is something I found on the Something Awful forums. Yes, I frequent them. Mastercontrol is the name. Big shocker there. But they’ve been talking about this recently. I tried to talk a little about this happening with some friends. How Azeroth will be redone. We’ll see my friends..blizzcon is only a few days away!

Azeroth is changed completely. Some zones are completely destroyed, some are shattered, some are flooded (Thousand Needles), some are ripped in half. Coastlines the world over are changed. Durotar is wrecked, along with Orgrimmar, which is torn in two. A new orc city is rebuilt over the course of the expansion. Gnomes retake Gnomeregan in an instance.

Malfurion comes back and helps activate the new Guardian of Tirisfal – Thrall. Thrall hands over leadership of Horde to Garrosh Hellscream while Thrall serves as a coordinator for both Horde and Alliance forces and players to combat the Naga and Black Dragonflight. Garrosh declares open war on the Alliance, and you can expect more Wintergrasp like areas on the old map. Due to some political manipulations, Cairne Bloodhoof gets painted as a betrayer and is murdered by Garrosh. Cairne’s son takes over as Tauren chief.

For Worgen, the Cataclysm brings the Greymane wall down, revealing their secret — that the worgen curse has ravaged the kingdom. They’ve managed to find a cure that keeps their human mind permanently but also keeps them in their worgen form. Seeing that they can no longer survive alone, the worgen residents of Gilneas rejoin the Alliance.

As for Goblins, Deathwing calls on the goblins as slaves like he has in the past. Their leader decides to go with Deathwing and enslaves his people because there’s no crossing Deathwing and surviving. Fortunately, a large group manages to escape and join the Horde, knowing that they can’t go it alone. See the pattern here?

The level cap is 85. New landmasses include islands that are raised as a result of the cataclysm, underwater zones, and the newly-redone old-world zones. Flying mounts will be useable in Azeroth. Many old-world dungeons are changed completely.

Half the point of Cataclysm is to remake the old quest lines, eliminate redundancy and give an overall narrative to all players, whether level 1 or 80. At any particular vanilla area, you can expect to see reconstruction/relief efforts, or all out war between Horde and Alliance NPC’s. Wailing Caverns is going to be completely redone into a lush green tropical area, as a result of the druids working their magic to prevent it from falling into lava.

Leveling from 80-85 will be a MUCH bigger deal. Initially in 2008, they considered not raising the level cap at all, as making those quests takes a lot of manpower away from raiding content. But they are trying to make the story so grand and sweeping that ding’ing will actually MEAN something and not just be something you do. An idea that was kicked around was making the tier gear go along with levels.

Expect a couple of underwater cities to be on the backs of giant sea turtles and whales.

Make no mistake, the Old God content is not done. Since Netharion and Azshara both have ties to Old Gods, it is now clear that the SERIES wide antagonists of WoW are the Old Gods.

Stone Roses song Pearl Bastard

The song has finally found it’s way to listenable means on youtube. It’s very obvious the Stone Roses turned this from Your Time Will Come into this, then into Sugar Spun Sister. But anyways, here it is for those that think 120$ is too much for that friggin 20th anniversary edition robbery.

Friday Night Horror Corner Day of the Dead

George A Romero’s 1985 zombie trilogies last episode was more about the human interaction between survivors and less about zombies.  Three distinct groups of people dominated this movie, civilians, scientists, and soldiers.  The group was sent to an underground compound to study the zombies and create a cure for the problem.  The soldiers were sent to protect the scientists and the civlians were sent to serve the soldiers and scientists.  Towards the end of the movie you see the breakdown between people who have lost hope, people who are in the last thows of civilization.  The possibility of the underground bunker containing the last vestiges of humanity make the soldiers edgy and willing to break down civilized laws, it makes the scientists disregard scientific morality, and makes the civlians want to pack up and head for the beaches.  This movie is yet another of Romeros insights into the human condition.  The lack of communication is what eventually leads to the breakdown which inevetably gets a majority of people killed and a few escape.

The last of the “trilogy” but not the last of the Romero films this movie leaves a bit to be desired from the first two films but should still be watched as a cult movie.  Not as succesful as the first two films but still has the distinct Romero feel to it it is a definate to be watched film.

So curl up on the couch and grab yourself a bottle of your favorite get hammered beer and have some fun watching this one.

OR if you feeling particularly daring watch the three romero movies than watch contagium and return of the living dead.

so untill next friday remember dont go into the basement and don’t open that door.

Onyxia Level 80 raid

Blizzard announced yesterday that they will be bringing back Onyxia as Level 80 10 and 25 man raid content as part of a 5 year anniversary. You’ll also get a in game pet “Onyxia brood whelpling”. Cool! Now, I’ve already done Ony a few times so this wont be “new” to me. But I imagine there are many new players out there who haven’t seen her before. It’s a pretty simple fight, think nightbane 1.0. They’ll be redoing the tier 2 content for the raid. The thing is I’m only aware of the helm dropping from Onyxia. The other tier items being found in Blackwing Lair and Molten Core. And 8 pieces, up from the 5 that we get now. I’m going to call this now that the new Expansion, which has to be Cataclysm will do something drastic to the world “of warcraft”. As in azeroth being re-shaped. We all know Arthas will be the next fight. And that raid will come out sometime during the Christmas Season. Raids usually last 4-6 months and I forsee the Arthas fight lasting as long as the BT length. There will also be a BETA time for the Expansion and as we saw it ran a good 4-6 months. So I forsee these mini content patches. Ones where they will be patching in the old content for a short duration so players can experience the raids before they blow up the world. That’s just my .02 🙂

Here’s what they had to say.

“She has lurked in her lair and done battle with the many brave adventurers who travelled to that familiar location over the years. Now, in honor of the World of Warcraft 5-year anniversary, the dreaded brood mother Onyxia is being revamped to make a return to the forefront of Azeroth, as part of our big plans for the upcoming 3.2.2 content patch.

This permanent update to Onyxia will convert the dungeon into 10- and 25-player modes. We will be adding new items to Onyxia’s loot table that have the same model as some of the classic loot from this dungeon, like Tier 2 helms, with stats updated to match the current level of content. There will be a special new item too: a normal drake-sized 310% speed flying mount modeled after Onyxia herself called an Onyxia Broodling. We will also be updating the encounter mechanics to be more fitting for modern raiding, but we can guarantee players will get to experience the frightening horror of deep breaths once again.

Then for a limited time, after the 5-year anniversary event officially begins in November, anybody who logs in will receive an Onyxia Brood Whelpling pet.

We’re very excited to bring this classic encounter back to provide a fun new experience for both new and veteran players. Further details will be available in the near future, and we will be setting up the Public Test Realms soon to help test out this fight along with all the new content we have planned for the patch. Keep an eye on the forums for updates!”

GBU CellPhone Zelda

Couple of days ago I was browsing online for a new free app for my phone.  Cause im cheap like that and I don’t really want to pay 4 bucks a month to be able to listen to songs online or 3.50 to immediately recognize those songs and have it download the song for me the next time i load my iphone to my itunes.  Not that I have an iPhone although I wanted one.  Just couldn’t get past the price.  So I was browsing for a nice little calander app that I could synch with some online things I have going on to be able to access them from my phone.  So I accidentally hit last page, and BOOM fate would have it that Zelda was on the last page.  So free download BONUS i ended up grabbing it to check it out later.

Good:  This is the ultimate of nostalgia on your phone.  I have seen pac-man and asteroids on the phones but ZELDA!  Come on man who didn’t love that freaking game.  Now I have it on my FREAKING PHONE!  Awesome.  The graphics are about par to the original graphics and its the same basic gameplay.  Some of the functionality and dungeons arent there yet cause the game isnt totally finished.  But it is the zelda you remember same exact layout and same characters.  Its great.

Bad: The gameplay is great but the controls are not really easy to get used to although once everything is set up and working correctly for you its wonderful to play.

Ugly: Ehh some of it isnt finished and its a bit rough to play in some areas and its not exactly the game i remember but hopefully once i pull up the old console and wipe out the zelda I will hopefully be impressed by the cellphone port.

GBU game review for Call of Duty World at War Map Upgrades.

Good: Nazi Zombies level. Fight off the invasion from inside a bunker or a mansion house or one of four other locations. OH MY GOOD BABY LORD JESUS. As you can tell this game was indeed MADE FOR ME. This is quite possibly the most perfect game upgrade ever. It doesn’t cost a thing to get the first one but the next three are each gonna cost ya pointage. So what though, ZOMBIES! Seriously can anything be better than simplicity of killing zombies and not having to worry about traversing an entire level. You simply have to defend a set position from approaching zombies through as many waves as possible. It’s brilliant because its simple and fun. As you kill zombies and fix barriers to keep the nasty undead out you get cash that you can spend to upgrade weapons, buy more ammo, or unlock more areas to exploration.

Bad: Nothing…seriously. The game itself is already on my top ten all time must haves, now it has moved to my top 10 must have never going to trade in games.

Ugly: I haven’t played any of the online multiplayer maps because I cannot break away from the zombie levels. I mean seriously so bad I almost didn’t go to work this morning.   Also I don’t believe Ive showered in a few days.  Hmm maybe thats why nobody at work will talk to me.

Seriously.  LurkerBelow and AtomicZombie fueled by Mountaindew and BBQ sammiches cannot be stopped by Zombies.  NOTHING CAN STOP US!  Except maybe a severe lack of really good BBQ joints in Philadelphia.

Leveling in Alterac Valley BG: My expierence

Last weekend, friday to be specific I embarked on a journey after reading the somethingawful forums. They were reporting that in Alterac Valley people were seeing really good xp gains for bg’s. I’m going to state a few things before I lay into this:

I have 2 80’s one alliance, one horde. One is a farming Dk and another a sweet and loveable shaman. I’ve bought three epic fliers in my time of playing. I have a 2 full guild bank tabs as well as being full up on my character’s bank tabs and quite a few thousand gold. When it comes to gold for alts I am in a word : OK. I was not doing it for twinking purposes. Or speed leveling. Or doing it because it’s lawleasy. Or doing it because questing is easy or boring. I’ve done the questing in Northrend on top of having 2 80’s, a 72, a 73 AND a 74. I was merely just seeing how the leveling went in bg’s.

So, I took the level 74 mage into an AV in the Battlegroup “Whirlwind”. I wouldn’t say Alliance Dominate in my battlegroup in all cases but we do well. It’s a pretty even split. Not like say the cyclone battlegroup where 90% of the victories come in AV and the rest is just a horrid grind for marks. In any case I put on my heirloom shoulders for the +10% xp and then checked the daily bg. It was AV! Nice! I sign up.

As usual we head down towards Galv, the first so called boss in AV. We down him in under a minute. 19k xp pops up on my screen as well as 300xp for killing him. WOW. Really? Next up the towers. Iceblood and Towerpoint. I skipped IB then ran to tower point and clicked on the wing commander and let his smelly self run away ASAP. Pppppppp-uuuuuu. I step out, mount up, and run towards the base. I’m one of the first to arrive. I run into the west tower, or is it east, and click on the next wing commander and away he goes. Next up, running and capping the tower. Check. The rest of my friends arrive and we clear out the base. Just as iceblood’s tower burns, 19k xp pops up. Holy smokes. Tower Point right after that. 19k. holy cow! That’s three quests in 5 minutes of my time! Then 6k pops up, and shortly after another 6k. It’s an XP extravaganza going on! I found out later that the 6k was coming from returning the wing commanders to the base. After some standing around east and west burn. 19k each! We head inside for drek. After a quickie 26k pops up! WOW.

All told 133,000 xp for a 15 minute match. Let me rewrite that. 133,000 in 15 minutes on top of honor gains which came to about 1500 honor. WOW. I’m ABOUT this kind of leveling right!!?

Well here comes the downside, and it’s to be expected so, it’s not really a downside. XP gains like this are not like this every match. Sometimes the wing commanders will get killed. Sometimes horde will backcap you, causing you to lose TP or IB. And then there will be the times you just flat out lose. I cannot stress how many times galv was fiercely defended. No matter if the kiddo’s in the bg chat said RUN BY, it meant horde were turtling and even if you did you’d still have to contend with 4 towers which will be fought for. It’s a turtle. Accept it and wait the 30 minutes for the fight to end. This happened late friday night, about 10pm to 12. And also on saturday and co-incidentally on sunday. I’m going to guess that “bedtime” co-incides with this. But that’s just a arrogant guess.

Sure I could have “farmed” hk’s but that’s not really my stylie right now. I”m here for xp. So never one to sit around idle like that I headed to the harpy cave. Since n oone was around to leech the xp I was getting about 1k a kill. Not too shabby. So I just cleared the cave and waited for it to all end. So lets fast forward to Sunday night. I ended up hitting level 80! All told, it was about 22-24 hours of gameplay to go from 74-80. I ended up getting about 80k honor in that span as well.

Some other small things to note:

Heriloom items do not apply to Battleground XP gain like tower capping, boss killing, flag captures. They do however stack with…..

You will get xp for killing any npc. So stick around the graveyards for xp gains and the towers. Try to pull some of the elites while waiting at the base. That’s xp. It’s not much, maybe a few hundred each. But a few hundred times 40 matches equal’s a lot. We’re all mathy nerds here anyways right?

Don’t forget the quests for AV out of the Alterac base camp in Azeroth. I hit exhalted and got 4 quest completes for upgrading the trinket. Gold and Xp. Score!

Daily quest. It’s gold and xp. No brainer there.

At level 79 1/2 I headed to Zul’drak for the amp of anguish quest chain. It’s easy, takes about 30 minutes to totally complete and gives a boat load of xp. It didn’t detract from leveling all that much.

The xp gains obviously vary as you get higher in level and rest xp is not eaten while in bg’s. So the emotion goes from from WOW to oye quickly. At 74 I was pulling in rougly 2 1/2 bubles a match on victories mentioned above. At 79 I was lucky to pull in 1 1/2.

At 78 don’t forget your Blue PVP set. You’ll get torn to shreds until 78 with your grappy level 70 quested gear.

All told I’m very happy now with my freshly minted 80. She’s all trained up, equipped with some PVP epics and all ready to go! I want to add that I took a level 70 paladin into a BG and god 5600xp for killing drek. Hardly worth the effort. I’d like to guess that it’s the 71-80 AV bracket in battlegrounds where alliance wins AV so maybe we’ll be lucky and not see blizzard change this. Maybe? And lastly, here’s a picture of a Gnome Warrior I saw on a Hog. Look at the driver of the next hog you see, well over half of the time you’ll see a Warrior in one. It’s almost a requirement if you’re a warrior.

Lost University

As any fan of the TV show Lost knows, remembering certain events and then pieceing them together is a bit of a course in ….frustration? Futility? I remember season 3, fearing the show would go the route of Alias and totally jump the shark, almost coming to a point where I stopped watching it. Paulo? Nikki? REALLY? Everyone also knows how there are teasers out there, the Lost Expierence, for really dedicated fans. Of course it’s mostly all non-cannon (some raging lost fan please prove me wrong). So it seems ABC drummed up another experience for the lositie’s, Lost University. The site is quite cute, and done it to be similar to a site design we did here at ecity promoting the new College Student Experience. Because we all want to live through THAT again. Ugh. Anyways, it’s neat, as I’ve said on our Podcast, this is a great age for television. Finally the big giants had to get with the times due to the proliferation of the content the other channels provide.

GBU game review for Mothership Zeta [Fallout 3 DLC] (Xbox360)

I spent a chill saturday afternoon taking care of the last of the Fallout 3 DLC(according to Bethesda, but again, they say never say never). If I gotta place this on a quality scale, here goes, best on top of course…
1. Broken Steel
2. Point Lookout
3. tie-The Pitt/Mothership Zeta
4. Operation Anchorage
…I played through it on the Xbox360, it’s also available on PC, and somewhere down the line it’ll be on the PS3…anyways, here’s my thoughts.

The Good – As usual, I’m happy with any DLC in the Fallout 3 universe that shows me some new surroundings, in this case, on board an alien spacecraft. You get to meet up with some new characters from different places in time that were abducted just like you. Audio logs strewn about the ship offer an interesting perspective on what your alien enemies really want, sometimes with hilarious results. You get access to a nice little group of alien weapons that are fairly powerful, and there’s plenty of drops on those as well. New aid items like alien biogel that can be modified so you’re patched up with 150HP(!), even better alien epoxy, repairs whatever weapon you have equipped(I haven’t tried it on earth weapons though). Some of the aliens offer a little challenge to take down, which is nice, especially when you’re at level 30. Some of the objectives are pretty cool and unique, like walking on the outside of the ship, and deathrays(!). You can return back to the ship anytime after you’re done, in case you wanna pick up whatever you left behind. Overall, if you’re a Fallout 3 crackhead like me, it’s worth having, taking my quality scale into account of course.

The Bad – The quest line is pretty linear…and a bit repetitive at times. As usual a bit short, it took me about 5 hrs, sure that’s not bad on the gameplay value scale, but on the Fallout 3 scale….maybe I’m just spoiled by the regular game :). There’s not much variety to the enemies, aliens, aliens with helmets, aliens with shields (ho hum).

The Ugly – The voice acting of the little girl you meet up with, she’s like a bad anime voice….you know, older person trying to sound young, that’s just weird to me.
