The Witcher – Impressions

With Steam sales goin crazy, having a pretty well equipped PC, and finally…..final-freaking-ly, I’ve set up my PC sitting arrangement quite comfortably. I can get into some of the stuff I’ve been wanting to try. I’ve always wanted to play The Witcher, and after a cool E3 trailer for the sequel, it seemed the time was right.

It’s a fantasy RPG where you plays as Geralt, a witcher(durr). Taking on quests, slaying beasts, plowing wenches(did I just type that?), and everything else that makes this type of game fun to play. It’s not really open world like an Oblivion, more like open section. Each chapter is a different area where you’ll run around taking on jobs, meeting some interesting folk, then following through with an interesting climax. You can’t go back once you’re done. The action is simple yet fun, the dialog trees aren’t too ham fisted, and the plot is pretty dang engrossing.  You’ve got choices, but it’s not the now cliche, good or bad system we’ve gotten used to. Example, one of the townsfolk who lives on the riverbank, offers to pay you to get rid of the nearby drowners(black lagoon sea monsters). You do the deed, some shady elves show up to take his supplies that are outside. Some of their guys are sick and need it, blah blah blah….do you let them? Or do you protect your interests? Well….since these elvin bustas threatened me to begin with, I layed waste to their bitch-asses. No good or bad….I just did my thing. And it was awesome.

It’s one of those games that’ll leave you like, “just one more quest”. Of course there’s multiple strings to said quests, and who knows how long they can last. Sure it’s got some glaring jankiness, but we’ll worry about that later. A review will definitely be coming…..it is an RPG, so I’ve no idea how long it’ll take me. I just know I’m loving this game….it’s got me, at work, thinking about going home just to play. As much as I dig the games I play(wouldn’t play them if they sucked, who has the time?), it’s only once in a blue where a game sticks with me like this.  Good stuff.

E3 2010 – What do you want to see? Double R’s Thoughts

Hey kiddo’s, it’s that time of year again. The time where our geeky selves get a taste of what’s on the way in the gaming world. The time where we get all giddy and squeal over cool trailers and the possibility of good games and stuff that should hopefully come out soon. Or get disappointed by it….Wii Music anyone? Ok, sorry Nintendo, that was cheap of me….but seriously….Wii Music?!? WTF were yall thinkin?!? You guys made up for it with Mario Galaxy 2 though, I’m lovin it 🙂 And on the honest side, it’s rare that I get disappointed by something I was blown away by at an E3. Now let’s see, what do I hope is gonna make a showing? Or not. I’m gonna stick to the big 3 on this. Off the domepiece 🙂

Microsoft
+ Halo Reach baby! Sure, multiplayer is cool for cats that are into it, but I wanna see some of that campaign. Since it’s supposed to be out in the fall, I don’t think an awesome trailer is outta the question.
+ Gears of War 3. This ain’t due till April of next year, but give us a taste MS. For realz.
+ Fable III. Yeah, I know I gotta get on part 2 and finish that jawn. But the possibilities of being a king and affecting the world around you, depending on your rule style? Should be interesting.
– Project Natal. Yeah, we’ve went over the cool possibilities of this, so far, unnamed, contraption. But I’m really not interested. After being burned by the Wii, I just don’t give a damn about motion control stuff too much. Besides, I don’t have the space to jump around my room just to do something a button press can accomplish…..Make me eat my words MS.

Sony
+ The Last Guardian. We’ve put up trailers and all that good stuff….just don’t know when it’s due. I’m praying for a fall release, c’mon Sony. Make it happen!…Or take your time till it’s right, I don’t want a broken game LOL.
+ Killzone 3. This just got announced. Won’t drop till next year, but I loved 2. It has it’s flaws though. Hopefully 3 is a smoother experience.
+ A new Jak & Daxter. This is just outta thin air, not even a hint if it’s being made, but those games were awesome on the PS2. The guys behind the awesome Uncharted games made them, so c’mon. Take what you learned there, and apply it here, should be good.
– Playstation Move. Like the Wii, but supposed to be better. See above. I know you guys want some of that soccer mom/senior citizen money that Nintendo gets, but stick to what you’re good at. Motion controls?…..zzzzzzz

Nintendo
+ New Zelda. Show me something that’s gonna excite me. I know I’m in the minority here, but the 3d Zelda’s just don’t do it for me….and Twilight Princess? Puts me to sleep man. I’m hoping for something awesome.
+ New console. No I don’t want a new Microsoft or Sony system yet. But Nintendo? Just gimme something that smooths out jaggies and displays in HD. Mario Galaxy 2 looks great, but it can look AMAZING. And make sure it’s cheap too!
– Vitality sensor? Add that to the list of peripherals I don’t care about. Who knows. Maybe they’ll do something cool with it *snicker*

3rd Party Stuff
+ Dead Space 2. I loved the first game. It looked gorgeous, sounded incredible, and really brought the creeps.
+ New Silent Hill. Konami announced a part 2 reboot. I guess sort of like they did with the last game. Which I thought kinda sucked…but this one’s in another developer’s hands. I’m hoping for the best.
+ Rock Band 3. I used to be nuts about the music genre. But the endless Guitar Heros and band specific games just made it boring. Maybe Harmonix will give us something to be excited about again….and I can dust off my plastic guitars 🙂

Rumor: Gears of War 3 release date

While it hasn’t even been announced yet, Edge-online has the good word through the rumor mill when this epic should be happening. April 2011 is the time frame. It kinda makes sense since Microsoft has Halo: Reach dropping this year, they’re not one to have major franchises in the same genre battling it out at the same time for sales.  E3 is happening in June, we’re pretty sure some info about Gears 3 is gonna happen, so we’ll know for sure by then. Stay tuned.

Sony @ TGS 2009

If you anybody keeps up on the big boy game blogs like we do, yall would know that the Tokyo Game Show is going on right now. And as usual there’s some big announcements, while we probably won’t be going nuts on it the way we did for E3, there’s some cool things worth mentioning.

First, a special Final Fantasy XIII themed PS3 with a 250GB hard drive. Sure, the game is coming out for both the PS3 and Xbox360, but I think FF fans always associated the series with the Playstation brand, after FF7 of course. Shipping 12/17 in Japan, no word on if it’ll hit here stateside.

Motion Controller updates. Looks like it’s coming Spring 2010. Not only new games will be utilizing the new tech, but a bunch of older games will be patched with motion control enhancements. Games like Little Big Planet and Resident Evil 5 for example. If handled right, I think this can be a cool peripheral. While not the be all end all interface it is on the Wii, which I never thought was a good idea(and with the amount of time we put into the Wii, proves that correct), it does make for a cool option once in awhile. Not only do you have physical feedback(something that worries me about Natal), but in combination with the Playstation camera(Eye), the interface knows where you are in 3D space. It could lead to some unique gaming experiences….now let’s hope the price is right.

Halo Reach

So, more halo news. I’m sure our wonderkid is jumping up and down as he’s reading this information. No word on what exactly this is but hey. More Halo isen’t really a bad thing? Unless this is going the way of the Star Wars Franchise? Here’s the trailer for Halo Reach from the E3 Convention.

The Last Guardian E3 2009 Trailer

Sony hasn’t released the direct feed trailer on the PSN yet (I want it HD!), but here’s a capture of the G4TV feed. This looks stunning, the creature reminds me of Falcor, the luck dragon from The Neverending Story….don’t know when this game is coming, but I can’t wait, enjoy the trailer below.

EyePet (PS3)

I just watched this off the PSN(Playstation Network), and wow I think this is pretty cool. It’s a game or more like a virtual pet app that works with the Playstation Eye camera for PS3. They show a cute monkey that you can pet, play with, even make toys for it to play with, this looks great for kids. No word on availability yet. Check out the vid below.

Brink (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) – Spring 2010

Publisher Bethesda, who we heart very much, has finally showed off their latest offering, Brink. It’s a futuristic first person shooter with RPG elements, some parkour stuff, and an open ended mission structure. This bad boy sounds a bit complex, I 1st came across it on this joystiq post, then kotaku which they sum up as “think Team Fortress 2, Mirror’s Edge and Fallout 3”, but they go much more in-depth, so please check out their post on what could potentially be Bethesda’s next hit.

Playstation 3 Motion Controller

Looks like Sony also wants to bite into some of Nintendo’s casual market share, today announcing their answer to motion controlling, sorry no cool names like ‘Project Natal’ or dates or pricing, just tech demoing on the E3 floor. Sure their pack in controllers on the PS3 has some motion sensing with the six-axis technology, but it’s nowhere near as intuitive as Nintendo’s Wiimote, or what Microsoft’s upcoming Project Natal seems to be. Here’s a little description from the joystiq post on it “The PlayStation Controller will work in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, which will capture movements of the motion controller for “true one-to-one tracking.” Sony showed off a variety of tech demos for use of the motion controller, including sword swinging fantasy, tank-based third-person shooting, archery, tennis and drawing — all of which are meant only to demonstrate what is possible with the motion controller and is not the final software for the new peripheral (Those looking for a PS Sports title, sorry).” Kotaku posted some news about it as well, check it out.

PSP Go – Oct. 1st – 250$

One of the worst kept secrets of the gaming industry this past year, the PSP Go, has been announced at E3 today. Dropping on Oct. 1st at a hefty 250$ price tag, updates include a slide out button interface, the elimination of the UMD drive so you’ll get your games through Sony’s download service, PSN(Playstation Network), 16Gigs of flash storage, memory stick micro slot and the addition of bluetooth, which will possibly provide smoother interactivity with the PS3. Check out kotaku’s hands on impressions straight from the E3 floor.

Team Ico’s “The Last Guardian” (PS3)

The Last Guardian was announced today for the PS3. We don’t have a direct feed trailer yet, but rest assured this game will probably be amazing. It comes from Team Ico, the guys responsible for a couple of my PS2 faves, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus. To me these games settle the argument of whether games can be art, and for some reason they hit my emotional buttons as well. A concept video(under the name Project Trico) leaked a few weeks back, that’s said to be a year old, and it looked great. We also don’t know much about how the game is, but it looks like it’s about a boy and his giant pet cat/dragon exploring a fantasy world. I can’t wait to see the final product.

GBU for E3 2009 (So far!)*

*-This just a play on our usually weekly game review posts, Jamie and I are quite serious about our games, but we can also be goofs too. This is all in good fun and is only semi-serious on my opinions on things :-p

The Good – OMG, full body motion detection camera from Microsoft! Puts you in the game, Matrix here I come! I can’t wait to hang with Milo. Splinter Cell Conviction exclusive to 360, sweet. Metal Gear Solid series comes to the xbox platform once again. PSP Go! looks cool. God of War III, whoohoo!  DJ Hero, my dreams finally come true in console form. Team Ico brings me “The Last Guardian”, yeah baby! New Super Mario Bros. 4 Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, hello, the kid in me is taking over!

The Bad – Awesome looking PS3 exclusives God of War III and Heavy Rain don’t come out till next year? Man are you serious?!? More like PSP Go Home! Hey Microsoft, how bout an idea of when I can get this ‘Project Natal’, and how much? Nintendo, you make me wet my pants with the Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer, and tell me I can’t get it till next year? Are you just begging me to sell my Wii?? Oh yeah, how bout 17 more Guitar Heros while we’re at it Activision? New Tony Hawk with a board? cuz I just want more peripheral junk in my house!

The Ugly – Project Natal will make me physically tired of using the 360 interface….Wii Vitality wants to check my heart rate, how bout this-beeeeeeeep….Oh yeah, nice Sony, way to show a lame lookin prototype to motion control, it’s like the Wiimote and Project Natal had a really lame baby.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

The guys over at Giant Bomb got a hold of the Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer. I’m loving the addition of Yoshi to the game. I loved it in the SNES mario and I’ll love it again. The game still looks worringly dizzy at times. hehe. Boom. BOOOOM.

God of War 3 Released 2010

Fresh from the E3 convention sony has announced God of War 3 to be released in March 2010. Here are some videos of God of War 3’s gameplay. I cannot emote the feelings of pure excitment I’m getting while watching this. This is a big reason why i wanted a PS3. I cannot stress how insanely amazing God of War 3 looks. The big where he grabs a hold of the bird in part 1. Jesus. P.E.T.A be damnd right? How about in part 2 when all the guys rush Kratos and he knocks them all away. Then the ultimate finisher on the Minotaur. maaaan.

E3 – Day 1 – Kojima Finally Comes Clean

As you guys can tell from some of Jamie’s previous posts, it’s the 1st day of E3(Electronic Entertainment Expo) and Microsoft is the first up to bat with their press conference. We finally get the news of Hideo Kojima’s next project “Metal Gear Solid Rising”, coming to the xbox360, but they didn’t mention exclusive, so chances are it’ll be on PS3 as well. Also with the subtitle “Lightning Bolt Action”, showing Raiden on the title screen, possibly confirming what I was hoping for. An MGS starring Raiden as he appeared in MGS4 with crazy fast sword fighting, matrix style action. Hopefully more info will be revealed soon.

Microsoft announces Xbox Live to have more Avatar goodness!

I pulled this from another places wonderfull coverage 😉 I should say that we’ll do an opinion piece on why we think this is the future of gaming. Not saying it’s the “saviour” but rather where gaming, and movies are going. Boom.

“Xbox Live’s Marc Whitten announced that, starting in August, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download full Xbox 360 games. Titles shown in a dashboard mock-up included Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect, BioWare, LEGO Star Wars and Oblivion.

New games will be offered each week.

Microsoft points will not be required, as the service will support credit card purchases.

Whitten declined to say how closely the games will be released to regular retail releases. Prices were not announced”

Dagnabbit Kojima, come wit it already!

For those that don’t know, Hideo Kojima, one of Jack and I’s favorite game designers, has been teasing something new via a viral website….his main claim to fame, the Metal Gear series…among others. This time a year ago, Jack and I were eagerly anticipating the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, and what a wonderful experience that was….but IMO, you have to be a fan and ‘get’ how things go in that world, ie, awesome gameplay followed by some extremely loooooong cutscenes with some insane storylines that only the japanese can do justice. This was the game that tied up all the loose ends of the series and felt like the last. Even Kojima said this was it….funny thing is, he always says that, so I knew something was coming in the future, hence that viral site. Yes, I see the timer and everything, every now and then they tease a pic, Raiden here, Big Boss there….it’s like, we have an idea that something’s there, just let us know the deal already…I understand the need to build hype and anticipation, but after a certain amount of time, I get frustrated and don’t wanna know about it till it’s out….as I said in the title, come wit it already! 🙂 Anywayz, I hope it stars Raiden, the whiny annoying star of MGS2, but became such a super badass in MGS4….Kojima forced us to play as him in part 2 when we didn’t want to, then made him so cool in 4, and nada, didn’t get to control him once….*sigh* Maybe we’ll learn something new about it since E3 is next week.
