Double R’s Top 10 Games of 2009

It’s the end of the year people. All the big titles that were gonna be released for 09′ have come out. It’s that awesome time of year where hopefully we get some extra time to spend with our family and friends, but also enjoy some quality gaming time.
Man, it’s been a heck of a year for gaming. For me personally as well, I mean, I got to feel the sting of a PS3 and an Xbox360 dying on me, which really sucks cuz I show so much care for my systems. But I kept on truckin and was able to play most of the awesome stuff I wanted to this year. There’s still a bunch of titles that I haven’t played or barely spent time with, though I’d like to. This list is the stuff I got to play through or spent enough time with to know they’re my favorites this year. You can say it’s in order, the best being no. 1 of course. All these are great and deserve some kind of attention when you guys get the chance.

1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)

-Probably the best cinematic adventure I’ve ever played, so many memorable moments.

2. Batman: Arkham Asylum (Xbox360, PS3, PC)

-A comic book super hero game that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. I even wanna play it again!

3. Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox360, PS3, PC)

-Incredibly exciting, like being in an awesome summer action blockbuster, without the corny stuff in between!

4. Assassin’s Creed 2 (Xbox360, PS3)

-Part one was an awesome skeleton to a great title to come. They actually built an interesting game and world that I love getting lost in.

5. Halo 3: ODST (Xbox360)

-It’s Halo, man we love Halo around here. The fun and shooting strategy this invokes just doesn’t get old.

6. Shadow Complex (Xbox360)

-A 15$ downloadable game that kept me sucked in and having fun a lot longer than a lot of 60$ games.

7. Killzone 2 (PS3)

-Intense….makes me feel like I’m in a real war.

8. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)

-It’s side scrolling Mario! ’nuff said!

9. God Of War Collection (PS3)

-It’s the same awesome God of War games from the PS2 cleaned up for HiDef. The PS2 versions were like old DVD picture quality, this is remastered Blu-Ray baby!

10. Rachet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (PS3)

-The classic 3D platforming series still holds it’s own….and looks damn good doing it.

Weekend Tour of Duty

As I sit here this morning, coffee in hand and attemping to find something of personal value to this blog I find N-O-T-H-I-N-G. More anime fandom posts from Kotaku? Yelch. Nope! Giant Bomb? Yeah, you’re great we cant cop anything else from you. 1up, you’re just a copy of Kotaku minus the anime fanboism. We used to be friends but not anymore. Heck I’m not even sure if rich and myself even listen to your podcast. Sorry Garnet Lee.

So what’s going on? It’s the “holiday season, yeah you know that season. The one that started the day after “Christmas”.  I can say that I spent my weekend smoking some meat in the back yard (picture proof not posted) and made my own BBQ spice recipe. It turned out great. While waiting around I managed to sneak in some Killzone 2 and Beatles Rock Band.  Killzone was a tad bit tricker as I got stuck on the ATAC.  The hint was to shoot some wing things off (clearly I listened) I did. But not the right things/wings but not bing.com. After about 30 attempt this thing was just flat out destroying me everytime. I’d waste all my bullets and missles, it got so bad I’m shooting at it with the REVOLVER. ARGH. >.<

At that point I told myself, what the hell am I doing.  Machine off.  There’s no way I’ll have to stop the game on a MEDIUM setting. Am I really that out of practice on shooters? Yeah, I am. It’s ok but still. It’s like riding a bike right? So what do I do?

http://www.youtube.com.

And I come up with this truly awful yet all too common video on youtube:

Anyways yeah. That’s really stinking easy. Shoot the blue lazors, hit with missle’s, and get trophy for beating it in under 1 minute 30. Check. Check. Check.  So was this better than a anime cosplay jrpgINSANELOVE post on Kotaku? Yeah.  Why do I even go there anymore?

New to Playstation 3?…c’mere for a sec…

So Jamie got the super dope hookup for his birthday, a PS3! I know the same reason he wanted it is the same reason I wanted it, a top notch bluray player with a solid game system to back it up. In the nearly 3yrs that I’ve had mine, I’ve grown to love what the system has to offer, great bluray playback, sweet dvd upscaling, and a unique library of game exclusives that gets better every year. If I was just getting a PS3, here’s what I’d probably start with.

1. Killzone 2 – I know Jamie loved the 1st game and this one is better in every way, it’s a damn solid first person shooter, and a real showcase for graphics abilities….stands almost as tall as Gears of War 2 IMO, sometimes better.

2. Resistance:Fall of Man – Another solid FPS. I know it’s old (2006!), and part 2 is out….but there was something about this one that stuck with me, maybe the awesome never before seen weapons, maybe the cool alternate history vibe(aliens instead of nazis!), or just the tight intense gameplay….either way, I’m happy to have this in my library, it’s greatest hits priced too.

3. Ratchet & Clack Future:Tools of Destruction – This one will also be greatest hits priced come June 16th. If you like the mario style of platforming gameplay, this series always delivered. Crazy creative weapons(the series staple), huge levels, fun characters and storyline….and graphics that almost feel like a pixar movie, highly recommended from the Richie Raw stash.

4. Motorstorm:Pacific Rift – A seriously fun racing game, you ride bikes, trucks, atvs, all at the same time while gettin down and dirty, this one’s pretty exhilarating…it’s a sequel to 2006’s Motorstorm, and while that one was great and alot of fun too, some quirks held it back (not enough variety in tracks, load times were a beeeotch!). This one fixes all that, it’s not too complex, mad variety in tracks, split-screen muliplayer, and another graphics powerhouse to boot.

5. Uncharted:Drake’s Fortune – Super fun 3rd person action game in the style of Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider, check out my review for more thoughts, another fave. I can’t wait for the sequel that hopefully drops this year.

I’d say that’s a good start, I would’ve put Little Big Planet, but I know he’s got that….Metal Gear Solid 4, but I stand by that you should be a fan of the series if you wanna tread those waters. Just about all these games have demos that you can download from the Playstation Network, so give them a shot. Speaking of the PSN, there’s also some downloadable games on there worth having too, maybe I’ll hit u guys up later with some thoughts.

Double R’s 1st Post!

Wut up people’s, the less-than-professional half of the mastercontrolcast here(gotta give the Chud man mad propz for gettin us goin!). I was just checkin the post he made about Bioshock 2….and, umm, yeah….I’m pretty wary myself too. Bioshock was like, my favorite game of 2007, in year where alot of hotness dropped(Halo3 and Portal, I’m lookin at U sons!), they have a lot to live up. I mean if we got some of the same peeps on the development team on board, maybe something special can happen again….but when 2K games are talkin multi sequels, I’m afraid they wanna start milkin before they even get to the farm!

So JC is spot on with the music analogy, but I’m a different beast of a hip-hop fan than he is, I takes my ish more seriously than most….don’t worry holmes, I don’t know too many heads who think Biggie’s 2nd is better than the 1st. But I gotta do a 180 and seriously disagree on the Nas comment…Illmatic, classic of course…It Was Written, pretty dang solid too…I Am, that’s where he started to drop off, it was so-so…Nastradamus, weeeeeaaaak….but he must’ve been hit with the reality stick after that, cuz Stillmatic was once again another classic, and everything after that has been extremely tight, I’d say an 8 or better(especially Hip Hop Is Dead)….but that’s just me, Chud man knows I’m way passionate about my hip-hop….I still die a little inside when I see what mainstream rap has become…oh well life goes on…..and cats on the underground tip are still makin it happen.

As I predicted last week, my moment of weakness came while at Target tonight, I picked up Killzone 2 and cannot wait sink my choppers into that bad boy….gotta get some stuff done around the crib this weekend, but I should be able to talk to it a bit for the show next week….later peoples!
