I’m no stranger to really cool collector’s editions of games that I really like, yes, I have the Master Chief helmet from Halo 3(quit laughin at me Jamie), but it don’t fit :-\ Obviously I’m joking, it’s not meant to….we’ll see if my witch doctor has anything to say about that though…..Anyways, I’m not one to jump on any collector’s console bundles, most don’t look that special in my opinion, see-Modern Warfare 2 bundle, and who can afford em either. But this Halo: Reach set just looks downright sexy to me. While I wasn’t too big on the 360’s new look, there’s something about that sleek greyish look on this one that I can’t keep my eyes off. Especially the controllers…..I WANT ONE!! Check out Kotaku or your favorite game blog for more upcoming pics….now excuse me while I pull out my Halo fanboy card that I’ll wear proudly when Reach drops.
*Comes out September 14th at $399
We some Gears of War junkies round these parts….so when rumors for the next in the series pops up, roll dog drooling comes with the territory. Anyways, as my homie Jamie reported on awhile back, Unreal Engine 3 has been updated once again, this time allowing for some greener graphics. So, instead of staring at awesome lookin rocky vistas all the time, we might get some jungle style environments this time.
Not only that, rumors of underwater levels are starting to sneak around the water cooler. If we get said levels, for the love of god, please….DON’T SUCK! That’s just been our experience around here, everytime a great game decides to throw you into the depths for a level or two, they just muck up the works(see Kameo, and pretty much any Mario title). Anyways, here’s some of rumors courtesy of 1up and Kotaku.
“The first two Gears of War titles are known for their brown-gray color palettes, but the third edition apparently looks to be set during the summer. That means underwater locations, and potentially jungle and other foliage heavy locations as well.
The Locusts will be getting another upgrade as well, this time being able to use tentacles to knock players from cover. To counter, the protagonists will be outfitted with special explosives that can travel beneath the ground to enemy locations, as well as a heavy duty mech suit.”
On what? Kotaku reporting on the Xbox Live interface spilling the beans early, that’s what. Well, no details yet, but the rumored date is confirmed. Gears of War 3, Xbox360, April 2011….gotta wait a whole year, dayum :-\
Hellz yes! Portal was one of my favorite games EVER. It’s not everyday that the first person genre gives you something new to do instead of just shooting people. But also something smart such as trying to solve insane room puzzles that, if existed….well, would probably be like watching Lost 🙂 Anyway, by way of Kotaku, here’s the Gamestop product description, promising that the game will drop in the fall on Xbox360 and PC.
“Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007’s Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.”
Can’t wait…speaking of Lost, you guys check out any of the Paleyfest panel stuff last week? Funny stuff when asked about a Lost themed Disney ride.
“Damon says there’s no need for an island to have a Lost-themed ride at Disney World: “Just put people in a black room, spin them around and punch them in the face and tell them ‘You just had the Lost experience.’” So true, 🙂
The guys at kotaku are reporting on the guy who was the first to leak New Super Mario Bros. Wii online. Nintendo found him cuz they were able to “employ the use of sophisticated technological forensics”….whatever. The pisser is that they’re ordering the guy to pay 1.3 mil “to compensate Nintendo for the loss of sales revenue caused by the individual’s actions.” Come on Nintendo, the effin game sold over 10 million copies, most games today are lucky to sell a tenth that amount. Sure, piracy is illegal blah blah blah….if they were hurtin, I’d understand a fine and all that, but this is outrageous. While I don’t share the same hate for the game as my partner-n-crime, he makes alot of good points that can’t be argued…this whole lawsuit business just might push it in that category for me though.
As I spoke of on our last podcast(or was it the one before?), I did some reading on that Game Informer issue that had some preview details. Hopefully I summarized it well enough for you kiddies. Also, enjoy some new screenshots from Kotaku.
So yeah, Halo Reach….is a prequel leading up to the series we’ve come to love. Instead of being the lone Master Chief, there’ll be a squad of Spartans this time around. It should be a new feel since you’ve got a crew of badasses and not just one. You got your rookie, the leader, a female spartan who’s second in command, the heavy weapons specialist, the stealthy cat, and of course the sniper. The planet the game takes place on, Reach, is said to feel lived in and detailed…so you really get a feel for when the downfall happens. The inevitable attack of the Covenant.
Reach is supposed to take on a darker tone overall, the Covenant won’t have the their humorous nature that we’re accustomed too…they’re gonna feel like a spooky threat. One of the new enemies, Skirmishers, are related to the jackals, but these guys are supposed to be very deadly, cunning ,attack in packs and will flank. The Elites finally make a comeback, while I like the recent Halos and Brutes being a fair main enemy, there’s something about fighting those Elites back in the day that really brought the hype.
The health system is gonna be like the first Halo, shield, a separate health bar, and having to find health packs. What would a new Halo be without a refresher in the weapons category, the Designated Marksman Rifle(DMR) is a cross between the sniper and battle rifles. Not only is it a headshot-o-matic at long range, it should hold it’s own at medium range. The sniper, assault rifle, and magnum pistol all make comebacks, modeled alot closer to their first game iterations. On the Covenant side of things there’s a new needle rifle, which is a mid-range headshot weapon, it acts like the needler but more flexible and accurate.Three continuous shots at a time can combine and explode, sounds like fun. The usual covenant weapons make their returns as well. One more thing, we’re back to the two original grenades, the frag and plasma if memory serves me right.
While battling should be as intense as we’re used to, or even more so, they’ll be a new stealth element….you ever sneak up behind a covenant and give him the ol melee? It’s incredibly satisfying, only that it alerts all his partners around usually…now you can sneak up, stab them from behind, all while no one notices. Armor abilities, another new addition, will give you a temporary perk when you decide to use it, everybody can hold only one at a time. What kind of perks you ask? High speed sprint for short periods, active camouflage which makes you predator invisible for a short time. There’s probably others, what’s cool about these is, once they run out, you just have to wait for them to recharge to use them again instead of ‘one time and done’ style of the past.
And lastly, the graphics engine….while ODST still looked damn good and all that, it was showing it’s age. This time not only will things look better in the Halo universe, but one of the big promises are that alot more things are gonna be happening onscreen, really driving home the epic gameplay and feel. Man I can’t wait 🙂
…perusing the blogs I came across this interesting story on Kotaku. We’re big fans of the music genre persuasion round these parts(Rock Band/Guitar Hero). So I found it interesting, Mad Catz, third party manufacturer of usually reasonably priced, ok quality peripherals and such, could’ve got a taste of the Guitar Hero craze. The first game only came out on PS2, the sequel came out for that and the 360 as well, which is when I got into the insanity.
Mad Catz was apparently handling operations that would’ve brought Guitar Hero 1 to the 360, but Konami filed a lawsuit to all parties involved. I can only assume because they had a series from the PS1 days known as Guitar Freaks, another music game with a guitar controller but nowhere near as good as RB/GH. The guys at Mad Catz didn’t wanna deal with this, so they paid 300K to get out of their obligation to avoid headaches I guess. Looks like that Konami suit went away since it’s unheard of these days. Fast forward 5 years and the bucket tons of cash that Guitar Hero has raked in later…..and man….that’s gotta sting.
If you anybody keeps up on the big boy game blogs like we do, yall would know that the Tokyo Game Show is going on right now. And as usual there’s some big announcements, while we probably won’t be going nuts on it the way we did for E3, there’s some cool things worth mentioning.
–First, a special Final Fantasy XIII themed PS3 with a 250GB hard drive. Sure, the game is coming out for both the PS3 and Xbox360, but I think FF fans always associated the series with the Playstation brand, after FF7 of course. Shipping 12/17 in Japan, no word on if it’ll hit here stateside.
–Motion Controller updates. Looks like it’s coming Spring 2010. Not only new games will be utilizing the new tech, but a bunch of older games will be patched with motion control enhancements. Games like Little Big Planet and Resident Evil 5 for example. If handled right, I think this can be a cool peripheral. While not the be all end all interface it is on the Wii, which I never thought was a good idea(and with the amount of time we put into the Wii, proves that correct), it does make for a cool option once in awhile. Not only do you have physical feedback(something that worries me about Natal), but in combination with the Playstation camera(Eye), the interface knows where you are in 3D space. It could lead to some unique gaming experiences….now let’s hope the price is right.
Looks like it peeps. The blogs like Kotaku are getting the same kinds of rumors and circular scans they got right before the recent PS3 and 360 price drops. It seems like it’s gonna be happening by the end of September, the same setup(Nintendo Wii with Wii Sports) will be dropping 50 bux, which puts it at a cool $199.99. Exciting? Well, keeping my douchebag quotient to a minimum, I CAN get an xbox360 arcade for the same price….just sayin…
If you hop on over to one of the blogs we heart, Kotaku, you can check out some footage of 3 new Halo3 maps in action. They’re gonna be on a separate disc that will come with Halo 3 ODST(Xbox360). I assumed ODST would ship with the Halo 3 multiplayer component and all the previous map updates….I guess I’m not so sure now :-/….well, ODST is due out in a little over a month, so we’ll know for sure soon. Man, Halo online still looks fun as hell….
Problem is, we don’t know when yet. Joystiq and Kotaku reported that a patent has been unconvered that Sony filed, in which the PS3 can emulate the functions of the PS2 CPU. Hopefully this will be for full backwards-compatibility, and maybe throwing some of those PS2 classics on the PSN. We’ll let you know when we know more.
Mad props to Kotaku, always quick to report on the movers and shakers in the industry….turns out that rumored new 360 revision(that comes with Natal), is happening after all. Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, spoke at the Executive’s Club of Chicago today(whatever that is,rich people alert!), and confirmed it. No straight up details yet.You guys know we’ll be all over it once the deets are out.
So now Microsoft is saying there will be no new console…..well duh! I think it’s pretty safe to say that when Project Natal launches, it’s going to be a 360 device/peripheral/whateveryawannacallit. But chances are they’re gonna push them together as a package as well, whether the 360 gets updated hardware specs, it’ll still be a 360 platform. A’ight, this back and forth is really annoying, so I won’t be reporting on this again till they have something interesting to say about it.
Since we’re fans of ‘play him off the keyboard cat’, I thought you guys might like this creative crossover that I came across on Kotaku. This little guy is quickly replacing the ol ‘pointing the finger and laughing at somebody when they fail’ for me, enjoy 🙂
Gaming news has a tendency of being a bit slow over the weekends(wait, they gotta relax too?). But that didn’t stop 1up from reporting on a mini whopper of a rumor, that when Project Natal ships, it’ll be the equivalent of a new console launch for Microsoft, shipping with a slightly updated version of the Xbox360. Updated in that games may run in higher resolutions, better framerates, etc, of course those games would have to be programmed to take advantage of the new hardware. Well Microsoft debunked the rumor, I guess. They say Project Natal will work on all 360’s(durr). Of course that doesn’t mean they won’t package the two together and push it as another relaunch of the 360. I say another because when they came out with the NXE(New Xbox Experience) last year, they very much branded it as a relaunch, touting how it was the 1st time that hardware has been refreshed with new software(don’t you just love corporate hype?). I for one wouldn’t mind seeing a slim 360 sometime in the future, hey, how bout when Natal launches *sarcasm* :-p
Kotaku posted up some Last Guardian screenshots for the PS3. I’m so lookin forward to this, it ain’t even funny. The guys at Team Ico really know how to convey emotion, the creature looks like he’s been through it man, the poor fella’s got arrows stickin out of him 😦 Make sure you check out the screenies.
I told a friend right before E3 started that Nintendo might show off some new Wii colors to keep things fresh, my reasoning, while it’s still the number 1 selling console, it’s not ‘OMG I can’t find it in stores’ level anymore. We knew there was more than 1 color before the Wii launched, it was only a matter of time. I was slightly right, on August 1st they’ll be releasing a black Wii in Japan, with peripherals to match(nunchuck, classic controller pro). In addition they will also be getting a red DSi July 11th, no word yet on when these bad boys will hit the states or elsewhere.
Publisher Bethesda, who we heart very much, has finally showed off their latest offering, Brink. It’s a futuristic first person shooter with RPG elements, some parkour stuff, and an open ended mission structure. This bad boy sounds a bit complex, I 1st came across it on this joystiq post, then kotaku which they sum up as “think Team Fortress 2, Mirror’s Edge and Fallout 3”, but they go much more in-depth, so please check out their post on what could potentially be Bethesda’s next hit.
Looks like Sony also wants to bite into some of Nintendo’s casual market share, today announcing their answer to motion controlling, sorry no cool names like ‘Project Natal’ or dates or pricing, just tech demoing on the E3 floor. Sure their pack in controllers on the PS3 has some motion sensing with the six-axis technology, but it’s nowhere near as intuitive as Nintendo’s Wiimote, or what Microsoft’s upcoming Project Natal seems to be. Here’s a little description from the joystiq post on it “The PlayStation Controller will work in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, which will capture movements of the motion controller for “true one-to-one tracking.” Sony showed off a variety of tech demos for use of the motion controller, including sword swinging fantasy, tank-based third-person shooting, archery, tennis and drawing — all of which are meant only to demonstrate what is possible with the motion controller and is not the final software for the new peripheral (Those looking for a PS Sports title, sorry).” Kotaku posted some news about it as well, check it out.
One of the worst kept secrets of the gaming industry this past year, the PSP Go, has been announced at E3 today. Dropping on Oct. 1st at a hefty 250$ price tag, updates include a slide out button interface, the elimination of the UMD drive so you’ll get your games through Sony’s download service, PSN(Playstation Network), 16Gigs of flash storage, memory stick micro slot and the addition of bluetooth, which will possibly provide smoother interactivity with the PS3. Check out kotaku’s hands on impressions straight from the E3 floor.
Coming this fall, the 2nd piece of exclusive(timed?) xbox360 content for GTAIV. In this episode you fill the shoes of Luis Lopez, another secondary character in the GTAIV universe, and another guy tied to the big diamond heist in the main game. The other guy being Johnny Klebitz of “The Lost And Damned” fame. I’m sure you’ll get to do all the cool gangster stuff that we’re accustomed to in a GTA game, the main thing being that you work for Anthony “Gay Tony” Prince, hence the title. Here’s a quick description from the kotaku post, “According to the official announcement, “players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price.”….yup, sounds like GTA, can’t wait to play this.
Them smoov cats at Kotaku threw this up earlier today, news of the 2nd piece of DLC that’s exclusive to the 360 version of GTA IV (for now anyway), via Twitter…’you know it’s a Twitter world when’…amirite?..:-) Details apparently coming soon, I for one can’t wait…if you follow the gaming exploits of Jamie and I, yall should know by now that I’m as gaga as a kid on christmas morning with anything GTA. Microsoft paid a cool 50 mil to Rockstar games for exclusivity on 2 expansions to the GTA IV universe, we got The Lost And Damned, which was awesome. Hopefully the next one will follow suit.
