The Horror Corner – Resident Evil Afterlife

So now we’re on our 4th Resident Evil movie….already?!? Yes peoples, the love-hate relationship continues with the geek masses out there. As in they love to hate these flicks. I don’t fall into that camp. I like them for what they are, mindless popcorn entertainment with some really cool action thrown in for good measure. I don’t go in expecting the Godfather over here. I guess some cats are pissed that these movies involve horror elements, but they’re really action flix…..and said cats want horror.

As far as the games are concerned, Resident Evil hasn’t really been scary since part 3 and/or Code:Veronica. I’ve seen reviews that knock the story, or lack thereof. But really, can someone explain to me one of the fuckin Resident Evil storylines and keep a straight face?? I love those games, but those stories are about as wacky and nonsensical as can be. So fellow geeks, please don’t sit there all high and mighty and expect the movies to fix that problem. What the movies have done though, is take elements from the games and weave them into it’s own, entity, if you will.

So here we have the story of Alice, played by the very fine Milla Jovovich, continuing where the last movie left off. She was the Umbrella experiment that fought back….and wants to get revenge on the corporation that’s killed most of the world with their zombie infection. Exhilarating action opens the flick as she rolls through with her clone army that they teased from the last flick. Albert Wesker showing up as public enemy no. 1, makes sure things don’t go smoothly. A series of other things happen, blah blah blah, then Alice goes to find her friends from before, comes across a new set of survivors locked in an office building. Eventually shit hits the fan. There’s a big battle, another cliffhanger confirming another sequel and it’s all gravy. Sure there’s story, but it’s light…..and that’s okay. The movie was fun.

This one take elements straight out of RE5, continuing the meld of game with their own movie. Special effects were good, the 3D was better, all around a good package for dumb entertainment with some okay zombie stuff in the soup. The 1st RE movie is semi-respected in some circles, 2nd is well hated(not by me though), the 3rd brought some of that semi-respect back…..I’d say this movie ranks with the 3rd flick in quality. Overall, it’s fun, looks good, and has some slick action sequences. Works for me.

GBU DLC Game Review for Lost in Nightmares (Resident Evil 5) (Xbox360)

Here you get to play through what was just a flashback for Chris in the main game. Being a huge Resident Evil fan, I’ve always maintained that I really liked RE5, but didn’t love it. Upon reflection though, it was a damn fine game once you got over the flaws. At 5 bux and available for the platforms that RE5 showed up on(not sure about the PC version though), this DLC is totally worth it and warrants a 9/10 from the double R.

The Good – The setting takes you back to a mansion that’s very reminiscent of the one in the first game. Except with all the modern audio/visual upgrades introduced in RE5, and man, this is still one damn fine looking game. Very impressive. You get teamed up with Jill again, giving you a welcome throwback feeling. The zombies make a brief appearance bringing some awesome jump scares. Speaking of scares, while the main game was pretty much devoid of any creepiness, this DLC brings the creepy back, and it’s good. My first time through, it took me just over an hour to complete. Once you know what to do, or if you’re an expert, it’ll probably take you a half hour.

The Bad – You can’t save your game….WTF?!?…yeah I know it’s short, but sometimes you gotta turn off the game man. If I’m taking my time and I’m a half hour in, I don’t wanna have to do it again later….which did happen to me. Whatever RE5 issues you’ve had, controls or whatever, won’t be any different here.

The Ugly
– Man, I wish all of RE5 was like this….I had a good time, it was creepy, gorgeous, and made me miss the days when you can easily find a creepy game.

GBU game review – Resident Evil 5

From Wikipedia
From Wikipedia

So I’ve been slacking a bit lately and lurker has been cracking the whip.  Ok so he’s been nicely asking me to throw up a GBU for a recent game I’ve played.  Best pseudo boss ever LOL.  So I’ve been playing Resident Evil 5 lately as a break from Prototype.  I’ve heard all the hype about this game being a first person race war shooter.  White guys against black guys.  Unfortunately the people who review these games at first glance don’t usually remember or care about the back story.  The progenitor virus which was the Umbrella Corporations big breakthrough in regeneration of dead cells started as a discovery in the heart of Africa, where as it so happens most of the people living there are indeed of African decent.  I just hate that people jump to the conclusion that it was a race related game when all they got to see was a demo that happened to have a  bunch of black zombies being killed by a white guy and a black girl.

So whatever let’s do a good bad ugly.

GOOD:  The game play is reminiscent of resident evil 4, game play and controls are basically what you are already used to.  The AI for your smoking hot helper who has a very nice accent is very advanced.   She can be set to cover you to be aggressive or to hold.  And bonus if you destroy the B.S.A.A emblems through the whole game she has a separate outfit that she wears SMOKIN!  Also the storyline to this one brings a lot of the series to a conclusion of sorts.  The ending which I won’t ruin is very surprising.

BAD: Ammo is scarce except on the easiest level forcing you to shoot a bad guy once and punch them for a finish, which to me isn’t as gratifying as shooting things.  However its nothing that isn’t expected.  All Resident Evil games have ammo spaced few and far between.  I still wish I could spray and pray instead of sniping with a pistol.

UGLY:  The Lickers come back.  I HATE LICKERS!  No really I hate the freaking Lickers.  Worst B.O.W.S ever made.
