Games you wish you could go back and play for the first time

Friday – Now there’s a Movie I wish I could go back and watch again for the first time. Somehow relive that feeling of being 21 all over again.  At that time, it was friday, I had no job, and I didn’t have shit to do. So, after about 40,000 watchings of this movie, of which I can remember about 5 due to the copious amounts of ugz my ROOMATES WERE SMOKING –  the movie has gotten a tad bit stale. The same with Half Baked, or even..gasp….Star Wars. The movies over time tend to lose their luster but, not in a bad way.  Just..like..a relic of the past.  I’m being a tad bit dramatic – I still laugh at the best of Friday videos on youtube and there is The Stone Roses debut album that almost 14 years later still sounds just as fresh as it did the first time I heard it. I can go back to that moment in time where it lives vividly in my memory and get that feeling all over again every single time.  You know the bit where the drums kick in at 1:30. Man, that shit will always be epic in my mind.  Here’s that shit live.

Any fuckin’ ways. I’m taking a long time to get to my point – as I usually do – my point is that I looked at the Fallout 3 case today and really longed for that moment where I realized that I was playing one beast of a game that would suck the next 80 hours of my life out of me.   The moment I realized I’m an addict and Fallout 3 was my Dealer with the good stuff.  I had no power over that plastic case and needed that FIX. I think myself along with 80% of the gamer population felt this moment with this game and knows exactly what I’m talking about without me having to refer to bullet points. So I won’t.

But, indulge me while I go back through what’s left of my mind mostly because i’d like to list here some games I’d love to go back and play for the first time. Here’s the Short List with my thoughts.

1. Fallout 3 (duh)
2. Sim City 2000 – I remember the feeling of the fucking chair because my ass was parked to it for an entire summer. I think this was one of the contributing factors to the decline of my Sporting Life but, so be it. It was a great game and my City’s were the Envy of ANY EMPIRE.
3. Railroad Tycoon 2 – I mostly remember the bucketloads of Chocolate Chip Cookie dough icecream in my first real apartment in college that I ate while playing this game. It was a pretty weird time – hence the copious amounts of Ice Cream – in the middle of winter mind you – but this was one of those things that stuck out.  It felt good building something successful. Little did I know that i was doing that to my own career. Who would have guessed in the power of the Sub-Conscious mind.
4. Legend of Zelda a link to the Past – My memory of this game is MEGA hazy as I was 12 at the time of this games release but I played the fuck out of it. It was the first game we got for the SNES. Yeah, I know no mario. Odd right? I love RPG’s what can I say. And it was also the time I got my first TV. A 10 inch RCA that I JUST THREW OUT LAST YEAR. Can you believe that shit. Yes. I hold onto crap. Anyways… Man…I loved the box art, and the smell of the box. I loved the music from the start. and..what’s this? RAIN?  SO COOOOOOOL. I’m sure Rich can point out the very first game where rain was used but this was my first game I really remember it being so effective at creating mood. It seemed so real and epic at the time. I was 12. Stop laughing.

So what games do you wish you could go back and play all over again with a fresh face? What games do you most want to experience all over again? I’m sure there are some Wowcrackheads that could easily name ONE game instantly. Just sayin’

HODE UP. ROCK BAND 3? OMG HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS

As reported everywhere in the planet, even KOTAKU, Rock Band 3 will be released. This time..IN SPACE. I’m kidding. Fuck that band. Even from a self proclaimed  90’s British Rock fan I’m saying fuck that band.

See for yourself.

Sorry to steal that 30 seconds of your life. Sorry, no refunds. I cannot give it back.

Hennyways Kotaku writes (because I’m quite frankly too lazy and you come because you don’t want to filter through all that ANIME RP BULLSHIT right?!).  “The keyboard is a “25-key, fully functioning MIDI” version of the real thing, and is one of two key improvements made to the game, the other being the introduction of a new “Rock Band Pro” mode for expert players, which replaces coloured tabs with real musical symbols in an effort to get players on the track to playing real instruments.”

Whatever, keyboards. That’s so early 90’s. Two things I gleaned from this article.

HUEY LEWIS AND THE MOTHER FUCKING NEWS

and..seemingly continued lack of Kinks is freaking odd. Steve Miller band over the kinks? Seriously? I bet by the time they do add kinks it will be something like Come Dancing, I just know it. Ugh. Whatever lets talk about fun things because we loves funs things?!

Here’s the tracklist for Rock Band 3. You have permission to go squee.

GBU game review for Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3)

Proving that 3rd party exclusives are hardly exclusive anymore, an updated version of the then exclusive Xbox360 game, Ninja Gaiden II(notice that ‘Only on Xbox360’ badge?), was announced this past E3 for the PS3, in Sigma form. Meaning there will probably be updated levels, weapons, modes, etc. Ninja Gaiden came out for the Xbox1 back in ’04, then remade as Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PS3’s launch in 06′ with those mentioned enhancements.

The Good – Awesome, fast paced hack-n-slash gameplay that really rewards the player for learning it’s deep combo system, button mashers beware, this game will not forgive amateurs. Deep upgrade system for weapons and powers. Beautiful 1080p graphics that run at a silky smooth 60 frames per second, sure it’s an update to a last gen game, but man is it pleasing to the eye.

The Bad – Notorious for it’s brutal difficulty level, I’m not kidding, I’m sure this game was the cause for many broken xbox controllers 5yrs ago. As I stated in the good, if you learn the system you can get through it, till I got near the end, my PS3 controller almost took flight! So I had to quit. Storyline is typical japanese style action fantasy, which means it doesn’t make much sense. First you’re fighting on a zeppellin, then in a casino, then underground against a dinosaur skeleton, wait, how’d we get here again? LOL

The Ugly – The boobie physics of the main female character, seriously, they don’t stop swaying or jiggling, it’s just weird.

Good, Bad and Ugly game review for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (xbox360)

2560-7
Mr zombie and I played the first Ghost Recons, together, all the way through. I have many fond memories of this franchise, beer drinking, and SNIPER ON LEFT SNIPER ON LEFT PINNED DOWN. I got a version of this on the ps2 but it was vastly dumbed down. With the biggest hinderance not having control over your AI teammates, not a team of 3 as done before and only ONE at a time. So it was with much joy that I found this game at gamestop for 9.99$. After playing, I think this is a very friendly price for someone who has not played Rainbow 6 Vegas or Gears of War.

Good: They take what was done in the previous iterations of the game and expanded upon it with unit control. Now not only do you have control over your 3 squadmates, you have control of air and tank support. It’s not always available but when it is, it’s fun. I never got a hang of the flying thing, called the cross-com, to scout out areas and have it report back on the position of the enemy. Mine always managed to be seen thereby giving away any element of surprise. The story is almost verbatum Rainbow 6 books, which is no shock. You fly in on a helicopter on the first mission. Ring a bell? A president is kidnapped and you have to rescue him/her. It’s also one of the first third person shooter games I came across, though i’m sure our wonderkid will reveal the first 3ps and amazed me. That effect will have obviously lessened with other games coming out doing the same thing. You can choose to play in first or third, a option I like, and switching between first and third is fairly seemless. To be honest it had not been perfected yet to the degree of the games released today.

Bad:
The AI is spotty in places. When you attempt to position your men to take cover against a building they bunch up like Mites on Ice. The Ai was just flat out dumb in the other games. The guys would just die instantly but they provided great cannon-fodder. Here that doesn’t occur. The cover system makes it appearance here and it suitably pretty weak. While fun at first glance you still get shot up far too much for “leaning around a corner”. You shot me from 250 yards seeing only my gun? Riiiiiight.

Ugly: Switching out your teammates. It doesn’t occur nearly as much as it has, why this was changed so much baffles me. I used to roll with a varied squad and this time round that didn’t happen. I think the game was really designed around the HD experience with elements of the previous games. Grenade tossing is just awful. Gun switching and description in the swap out menus I found to be an exercise in futility. I’m sorry that I don’t know the name designations for modern ground assault. I guess I missed that class in college. Wooops.

GBU for Advent Rising (PC , Xbox)

Photobucket

The first thing I am sure that comes to every ones mind is, “Advent What!?” And indeed you should. This game was released in 2005 by developer GlyphX Games and unfortunately is now present in the developers graveyard of games. I originally bought this game upon release but it can now be found on Steam for $9.99 thanks to publisher Majesco.

I wanted to review this game because it is one of my all time favorite games and one I thoroughly enjoyed playing. Its greatness can be truly found its script written by Orson Scott Card and Cameron Dayton. Orson Scott Card is well known in the Sci-fi novelist world for have written such great novels such as Ender’s Game, a fantastic book and highly recommended.

This is one of the only games I have sat and played through from beginning to end without stopping. Now on to the show!

Good: You play as Gideon Wyeth a space pilot who is charged, as well as his brother, with the duty to pilot a shuttle carrying human diplomats that will make first contact with the aliens on board their ship. Once they meet the aliens the say they came to warn the Human race that some bad bugger named Seekers are headed to wipe them out of existence. Unfortunately a warning too little too late because the Seekers succeed and Gideon as well as a few other are the last remaining humans. With the help of the good Aliens they help to unlock a hidden potential in humans that allow them to use special powers that humans have potential for but fell away from along ago in their forgotten history. Unlocking new powers and set on revenge this shit is about to get real.

This game is setup to be a 3rd person shooter with the ability to use a power or gun in either hand. In the PC version of this game Left clicking would fire the assigned power/gun to it and right clicking would fire its assigned power/gun. Gamers associated with the Diablo Series can quickly adapt and truly appreciate this setup allowing for a barrage of blaster fire and some power combos. As you progress through the game you are introduced to new powers and abilities which you then can level up the more you use them. Eventually you get so used to using only powers and the need of guns becomes irrelevant. The best power by far is introduced to you later in the game where once fully leveled you can slow down time and truly kick some bug arses.

The best part about this game is that graphically everything from the backgrounds to the use of the powers are quite beautiful and when paired with an amazing epic sounding soundtrack and script this game truly shines. You are left with an immersion into the story and just want to know what was going to happen next.

Bad: Sadly there are a few problems with this games that hinder its excellence. There was a few times when the bad guys beat the living crap out of me and no matter how many times or different ways of doing things differently be it leveling up a power for an hour just to loose it all cause I failed miserably. This caused anger and frustration, the  dark side definitely arose inside me something only I would wish upon my boss. Eventually I did progress but it wasn’t pretty…

This game came out in the times where games began to invoke choice systems, where one’s choice would influence the outcome of events yet to come. This game only has one key part that gives you this choice and having played through the game both ways the outcome doesn’t really changed anything at all, just simply who accompanies you along the way. Seeming to be a very important issue at the time it eventually just makes you feel like they could have done more with the decision making – story driven content the game barely provides. It appeared that they wanted to do more with it but had their efforts cut short.

Ugly: The very unfortunate and and worst thing about this game is that the other two games that were to follow were canceled leaving you with the thoughts of “WTF NOOOOOOO!” after being pulled into the story for so long. This game was even suppose to tie in with a comic book series but that too seemed to come up short as well because of the game being canceled and the company going the way of yoga. The game company and series has become one with the force…

Halo Reach

So, more halo news. I’m sure our wonderkid is jumping up and down as he’s reading this information. No word on what exactly this is but hey. More Halo isen’t really a bad thing? Unless this is going the way of the Star Wars Franchise? Here’s the trailer for Halo Reach from the E3 Convention.

Mass Effect 2 Gameplay

More News from the Mass Effect 2 camp. There is a video of game play out on the innerweb’s. One thing that stands out is the, literal standing and fireing that is still present in the game. We don’t know what “mode” it’s on, this is probably easy to be honest. And that is present in most shooter games on the Easy mode. The part where the player shoots off the Mech’s leg and it keeps coming for Shepard is AWESOME. It appears the menu’s are the same so we can probably expect more of the same but a polished style and gameplay for Mass Effect 2 ala Halo 2. Enough of the chit-chat. Here’s the video of the Mass effect 2 gameplay!

Star Wars Clone Wars Game

Worried we are.

Worried we are.

There’s a new Star Wars game coming out and no, it’s not Battlefront 3. It looks like it’s coming to all platforms too. So, at first glance from the video on their site it looks to be a more simplified version of Star Wars Force Unleashed. Is that a good thing? Problem be it may. Worried we are. hmmmmmmmmmmm.
